To keep social media posts organized and according to schedule, you need an editorial calendar for social media.
Planning all your social media posts at once may look very difficult and annoying, but it’ll save a lot of time and work. And also, it’ll help you to maintain consistency.
In this article, you’ll learn how to create a social media content calendar.
Content plays an important role in social media marketing. A content calendar is used to prepare and organize upcoming content.
To create and maintain a content calendar, you can use tools like coschedule, sprout social, and many others.
All these tools are amazing and work perfectly.
But, every good thing comes at a price; These are paid tools.
Small startups and solopreneurs can’t afford, or sometimes they don’t need a separate tool to organize their content.
I’m a solopreneur, and I organize my content by myself.
It is very easy; You can create your own social media content calendar in less than 5 mins.
Steps to create a social media content calendar:
#1 Select social media platforms:
If you’ve already chosen your targeted platforms, you can skip this step and move on to step #2.
Biggest mistake of social media marketing is, being on all social media platforms. I have made this mistake in past.
When you want to grow your business on social media, consistency, and quality, these are two major factors which help your business.
And to achieve these two factors, choose few social media channels.
Just the ones that work for your particular brand or business and which your targeted audience use the most.
#2 Create a content theme:
Now, the theme is nothing but a pattern which helps you in content creation.
For an example,
- Monday: content promotion
- Tuesday: null
- Wednesday: ask a question
- Thursday: brand voice
- Friday: humor
- Saturday: product/service promotion
- Sunday: null.
There is no fixed pattern; You can choose what suits your brand.
Be creative and experiment with your theme.
#3 Decide frequency and timing:
Post frequency and timing varies from business to business.
Your frequency also depends on which social platforms you’re using for your brand.
For example, you can’t post 10 times a day on Facebook. If you do that, then the audience will think you’re a spammer.
But on another side to grow on Twitter, you need to post more than 10 times.
If your business is in B2B space, you’ll find weekdays and between working hours the most winning time to post.
So, frequency and timing are different for every business.
Here, are articles you can read to decide post frequency and timing:
#4 Create a spreadsheet:
You can skip this part by downloading my Social Media Calendar Template 2018 for free. I use this same template to create a content calendar for my clients and me.
Or continue reading,
Open spreadsheet. You can use Google spreadsheet or any excel sheet to create one.
Now, it depends on you and your work schedule.
I create content for a month; You can choose what works for you. Weekly and monthly content creation are what most people prefer.
Start with a blank sheet.
Add columns as Platform, Date and Time, Caption, Image/Video link, UTM link.
You can add any other columns like Schedule Status or Likes, Comments, Shares. You can use this as a small analytic report too.
Note: You need to have basic spreadsheet knowledge. You can learn the basics from YouTube videos, or you can download my content calendar template for free.
#5 Create content
As I said, you can create content on the weekly, monthly, or yearly basis. With this, you’ll have a content bank.
If you have never created content in bulk, this tips will help you:
1 Add all Holidays and special days:
Start with creating content for upcoming festivals, holidays, awareness days.
Don’t talk only about your brand, involve with your people on festival season.
On special occasions, people talk and search about it on social media. It’s the great opportunity to have new eyeballs on your brand.
Mark these days and create engaging content.
2 Behind the scenes:
People like to engage with other people, not with brands.
Show them you’re the real people behind your brand.
Celebrate your business anniversaries, achievements, team members’ birthdays, fun time in workspace, parties, and everything.
3 Show your voice:
You are not the only one selling the products or services. Many other brands are just similar to you.
Keep yourself apart from the crowd with your unique voice.
Try to be creative as much as you can.
Don’t copy others; Create something of your own. Show your voice in your content.
4 Showcase your products and services:
Let people know what you’ve for them.
Show your expertise by giving valuable advice, tips, tricks. You can create content bank using this tips.
Once you’ve created quality content, add the content to the content calendar.
Now, schedule the content. It will take not more than 15 min because you’ll have all the content ready to schedule.
To keep your social media active, and to achieve your goals, maintain a content calendar.
You can use tools, predefined templates, or you create one by yourself.
