Social media marketing has become a surviving entity for small businesses, and already established brands are using it to achieve new heights of success.
In this process of survival, a small mistake can ditch your marketing strategy.
Today, I’m pointing out a mistake which is significant and the most common in all social media marketing mistakes. This mistake can fail any brilliant social media strategy; Mistake of being on all social media platforms.
Any business can market their products and services or even run whole business on social media. For this brands are using paid and free both strategies.
A striking presence on social media helps in generating sells, leads, brand awareness, customer service and much more.
Unlike other businesses, even I do marketing for my business. I’m a blogger. I blog about social media marketing. And of course, I use social media platforms for marketing.
In other words, I promote my blog on social media channels.
Till now, what I’ve learned about social media marketing is every business should have a strategy before getting started on social media. Once you have made a plan, execute and then follow it.
I did the same. I made a strategy for my blog. First I created the presence on social media, then posted some quality content, and tried to increase engagement with the audience.
But, being honest with you; nothing actually worked.
Why? Because I was using almost every major social media platform for marketing.
Now, you may be confused and about to leave. But, I can prove it.
Biggest Social Media Mistake I was doing,
When I’ve started this blog, I’ve chosen to promote it with the free approach. As a newbie, I can’t afford a paid marketing strategy. So, I continued with organic marketing.
Being a social media marketing blogger, I know how each platform works.
I chose to use almost every major social media platform – Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Pinterest.
I’ve read blogs on choosing the right platform for business.
My blogs cover every part of social media marketing from B2B to B2C. So, it was suitable for every platform. (That’s what I’ve thought at that time)
So, I created the presence on social media. Added social icons on the website and started promoting my blog.
The biggest problem I’ve started to face is lack of consistency.
I’m single owner and author of this blog. From site maintenance to blog writing to promotions, I’ve to handle it alone. Apart from the blog I’ve to manage my clients too. It looks effortless, but it’s not at all easy.
In resultant, inconsistent on each platform and zero progress.
I thought, I’m not doing it correctly, and I need to pay more attention to promoting my blog rather than creating a quality blog. So, I started focusing more on blog promotion. In the end, everything was messed up.
That time I realized, where I’m lagging in promoting my blog.
Being on all Social Media Platforms
Whenever you plan to promote your business, you create your business presence on all the key social platforms.
Obviously, you don’t want to miss out any chance of connecting with your audience. The more you connect, the more your business will grow.
You want to increase your business, that’s why you put soo many efforts.
One thing which you forget while promoting your business on social media is the availability of human resources and time.
It’s good that you want to give value to your audience. But, what’s the use if you can’t provide them that value which you promised.
When you want to grow your business, Consistency and Quality these are two factors which help your business the most.
The Real Problem,
When you’re just starting with social media marketing for your business, you need content. High-quality content which can engage your targeted audience.
If I divide this entire content process into parts, it will be,
- Content Strategy
Now, as you know, every platform has a different audience behavior. What you’ve planned for one platform may not work for others.
So, you’ve to plan different strategies and accordingly have to create content for each platform individually.
Here, the real problem starts. If you’re a large business and you can afford to hire a social media marketing agency, or you have a separate team for that then you can manage all platform at a time.
But, if you can’t afford that or you’ve only one person to manage everything, then it’s tough.
That’s the reason I’m calling it the biggest mistake which businesses and marketers make. And it’s most common mistake.
3 Steps Social Media Strategy:
I adopted these solutions, and they’re working well. From last three weeks, I’m highly active on social media.
Now, my engagement ratio is also growing day by day.
#1. Select Right Platforms
Start with choosing 2 or max three social media platforms for your brand. Select them according to your targeted audience.
In my case, I’ve decided to choose Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
You can use all other platforms too. Just post once a week, or only post special offers on other platforms. But, keep your focus on selected channels only.
Once, you’re used to creating and posting consistently; you can start with other platforms one-by-one. That time it’ll be easy for you because you can ask your audience to follow you on other platforms too.
Now, maybe you’re getting my point.
#2. Create Content Calendar
A content calendar is a source that marketing teams can use to plan all content marketing activities.
I create a content calendar for a month. According to that calendar every week I create content.
The advantage of using the content calendar, rather than just a catalog of content to be published, is that you can imagine how your content is shared throughout the week, month or maybe a year.
#3. Schedule the Posts
You have the content, and now you’ve to be consistent. For that, you need to schedule your posts.
Many scheduler tools are already available in the market. You can choose any of them. Some are free, and some have premium versions with extra features.
I use Hootsuite scheduler for Social Dong. I use the free version. It allows me to schedule for max three platforms in the free version. That’s perfect for me.
Because of these schedulers, it’s easy to schedule posts according to our audience timing.
Like, the majority of my Twitter audience is active in the morning. I schedule my Tweets in advance so that I don’t need to wake up early morning just to post my content.
It makes very easy to focus on your work, without worrying about social media activeness.
As I said, be active on your selected social platforms and post once a while on other platforms.
But, always promote your preferred social media platform only.
If I talk about myself, when I realized my mistake, I removed all other social icons from this website. I started promoting only selected platforms.
You can use the same strategy to promote your social platforms. Add social icons on Website, on advertises, boards, social media posts, and everywhere you can.
If you’re adding your business name, logo somewhere, do not forget to add your social handles.
I spent my four months thinking why my social media game is weak. Now, you know, it was not at all difficult to manage social presence, but because of a small step, I struggled so much.
I’m happy that finally, I realized and now I’m managing my social presence like a pro.
It’s your time to take the right steps and achieve your goals. If you’re a newbie; just started with social media game, just go for it.
Even if you’re not, and struggling for a while, it’s time to improve your strategy.
So, don’t forget,
- Select right platforms
- Create content calendar
- Schedule the post
